I generally never know what to say in my monthly journals during a festival.

My life quickly becomes both a lot of fun, but also very routine.  I work during the week down in Charlotte.  In the evenings I hit my CrossFit gym.  Then I go home, grab dinner and watch a show to wind down before turning in for the night.  Friday right after work, I head to the airport.  I fly.  I get picked up at the airport and head to festival.  A little bit of hanging out with whomever is around.  Then two long performance days.  Early to bed on Sunday because I usually have to be up at 4am to go to the airport.  Almost every festival in the country is almost exactly an hour from the airport.  At least that's my experience.  And my flights are generally between 6am to 7am.  Once I land, I drive straight to my day job to repeat the whole cycle.

So figuring out what to put here becomes very difficult.

I did extent my trip by a day one weekend. Â What did I do? Â Why, I hit one of the local CrossFit gyms, of course! Â Good workout, great trainers, great box. Â What a shoulder workout. Â I was definitely feeling it the rest of the weekend.

Also spent the time getting ready for the appearance of our newest brother, Valentine (aka Paul McColgan). Â The lucky bastard is getting to spend his last weekend of freedom at DragonCon. Â So very, very jealous of that one. Â I haven't been there in five years. Â But I tell ya, I'm looking forward to performing with that Florida boy.

Oh, and because everyone shares them, be sure to check out my ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

I also suck at taking pictures apparently.

Man, July was one crazy-ass month.  My birthday party was at the end, and it was going to be a big one.  So I had a lot of work to do around the house.  Basically taking out a load bearing wall, so I had to do a bunch of work in the crawlspace, and put down a new subfloor.  And temporarily raise a header to make a new "door" into my kitchen.

We finally got all the work done, and it was worth it. Â But man, was it some long weeks.

The party itself was a blast, and a fun mixer for my friends. Â Wearing as many hats as I do, I have many different circles of friends. Â Rennies, work, gym, burlesque shows, theatre, etc. Â I basically just invited people at random from my friends list.

The party was great. Â I think we had 35-40 people at one time in my tiny house and back porch. Â I over did it just a little on the alcohol. Â I fell asleep at midnight. Â But don't worry, I woke back up two hours later, and lo-and-behold, people were still partying. Â So I got back up for my second wind. Â I finally went back to bed about six am. Â Man, what a great party!

July, the heat of summer in the South, and my birthday month. Also my last full month off before heading to the Michigan Renaissance Festival. I don't know how I can simultaneously both try to get a lot of things done, and seem to have nothing really to show for it. I blame having the day job and hitting CrossFit each night during the week.

But I definitely enjoyed the time home with my boy, Bacchus. We actually got out to the parks a few times which was a nice treat for both of us. Despite the fact that he will continue to try to mark every single tree, bush, hydrant, post, light, duck, and child despite the fact that he ran out of ammunition within the first five minutes of the walk. Boys will be boys.

Shoulder acted up on me one day at the gym again. We were doing a one rep max shoulder press. I didn't notice anything at all, and went on to work on my muscle ups for a bit. My friend Matt comes over and asks “Dude, what happened to your shoulder?” Now I've got a little bit of scar tissue on top of my AC joint, but it had swollen up a good ½ to ¾ of an inch. Definitely not good. I went back in to the doctor but they took the “wait and see” approach. I'm going to give it a month or so, then start doing heavy presses again. If it comes back, I'm going to call in and insist we skip a follow up and go right for an MRI so we can see what's really going on.

Mead glorious mead...

I finally bottled my Peach Mead. It had been sitting in the secondary for about a year. It was the batch that I pitched during my birthday party last year and I wanted to have it ready for people to enjoy at my birthday this year. I did some tasting of it and decided that it was a little dry for what I wanted. So I put some stabilizer in it, and back sweetened with about three cups of honey. Much better. Then I “cheated” slightly and added some peach extract. It didn't really affect the flavor at all, but it gives it a much strong peach aroma in the nose. I was very happy with the adjustment. So I opened two bottles for my birthday, gave a few away. I think I have 16 bottles that I'm going to try to hang on to for another six months at least.

Birthday Vacation!

Gotta tell you, I was one happy guy. I dont't think I've taken a vacation of more than just Saturday/Sunday since I joined the Tortugas. But thanks to a clerical error with my vacation time at work I had more days that I thought. (I usually use most of my vacation days for Tortuga work or travel days to get to Tortuga work.) Shanna's extended family owns a few vacation properties on the Beach and they had an opening. So they gave us a little bit of a deal and we were able to spend about five days on the beach.

It was gah-lorious! I don't remember the last time I had that many days with zero responsibilities. No where I had to be... nothing I had to do. We'd make plans, if we got to them, great! If we didnt'... who cares.... beach!

It was definitely long over-due and needed.

Michigan Bound

And now, it's time to start getting ready for Michigan. And the introduction of our newest brother, Fortunato. Played by the has-too-pretty-of-a-smile Liam Selvey.

I believe I've talked about this before, but I am generally “first contact” for people auditioning for the Tortugas. I talk to them, let them know what we're looking for, what we want to see in the resume and audition video, tell them about the gig and what they can expect. And then I look at the videos first and let Gold know if there's any videos they should watch and consider. And I did that for Liam also (He had a great video, I'm betting you'll see it on the site soon!). So the guys decided to hire him, and we'll be training him right before the start of Michigan.

But ironically, due to the coincidental logistics of where everyone has been at during the last couple months, Liam has had a chance to hand out with both Gold and John for a weekend in the last eight weeks or so. I've actually not met the guy and won't until the week before Michigan.

That being said, it sure looks like this guy has chops. Here's hoping the third one breaks that dreaded “Third Tortuga Curse” that Blue seems to be dealing with. No pressure, right Liam?

Yup, this month found me back in the Mid-West. Â But alas, only for a weekend. Â It's time for the Siouxland Renaissance Festival. Â It's a small tent festival, but they have always treated us very well, and this year was no different! Â I ended up flying into Minneapolis and met Amanda Renaud of the Jypsy Jesters. Â We then hopped in a rental car and made the long trek to Sioux Falls.

It was also a bit of a treat if you were looking for a different Tortuga show. Â Just like in Scarborough, it was a two-man blue team. Â Don't worry, Liam will be joining us soon in Michigan. Â John and I have gotten quite good at performing a two-man Robin Hood show. Â But since Siouxland has treated us so well, we decided to be a little more ambitious. Â We rewrote the Big Bad Wolf show as a two-man script. Â I'm told that at one point Gold performed it as a two-man, but we couldn't find that script anywhere, so we re-wrote it ourselves.

But wait.... there's more!

Two man Wolf script? Â No problems. Â Now, what would you say to a two-man Sword Fighting and Stupidity script? Â Been there! Â Done that! Â Now it was a challenge. Â That show is extremely modular to begin with. Â But we've gotten very good and slicing and dicing it into whatever we need it to be. Â We've performed small parts of that show at opening gate, at Queen's Teas and King's Feasts. Â All we had to do was move a bunch of jokes around, and viola. Â You should have been there!

I also went and saw Big Momma's House of Burlesque again. Â It was a Great Gastby theme. Â So of course I found a lovely vintage three piece suit. Â What is it about a suit that makes any guy look better? Â They had some great dances, and I love supporting my friends and fellow artists. Â Plus the girls aren't bad too look at either.

I started a small-ish remodel on my house. Â Trying to make my house work better for me--since I won't be able to move anytime soon. Â So I'm taking out a small section of wall between my living room and my kitchen and I'm putting in a small island. Â Hopefully this will both open up the space more, and give me some much needed storage space.

And it's summer! Â Of course I had to throw a beach themed party!

Nothing too exciting going on this month. Â I have a nice break from Tortuga, so that means time to get some work done around the house!

Sticking with the not very exciting theme, I've made my first trip (three of them actually) to an inert land fill. Â Since I bought my house I've had a large stack of decorate concrete blocks and crappy pavers sitting on my carport. Â Probably ten feet by twenty feet by six feet. Â Finally decided to get rid of them. Â Took three trips filling up my truck each time, but I got it done. Â Carport looks much better now and better for hosting parties!

Also went to the NC Beer and Music Festival. Â A bunch of regional bands, and probably 30 different craft breweries. Â They also had one very large tent for home brewers. Â Definitely a lot of delicious brew there. Â Including a ginger cider that I fell in love with. Â We definitely need to make sure we make it out for the full day next year.

Also started demolition work on my house. Â Once upon a time there was a fireplace in the living room. Â The previous owner took it out and put in a crappy built-in entertainment center. Â The original plan was to take out the entertainment center and cover up the wall. Â This would make the living room look better and give me a pantry in my kitchen again. Â However, plans got more ambitious. Â I'm now going to take out a wall and put in an island. Â #ProjectCreep

Also got ready for the Siouxland Renaissance Festival. Â I flew out on the last day of the month, so you have to wait until next month to hear how that trip went!!

Is it just me, or does it feel colder this year than last February? Â I need someone to help keep me warm.

The first three weeks were pretty laid back. Â Last minute preparations for heading down to Bay Area Renaissance Festival. Â The most exciting thing in my work would probably be pretty boring to most people. Â We implemented the largest and most expensive project I've ever had at my work. Â We've installed two EMC AVAMAR systems to manage our online backups. Â No more DLT tapes! Â I know that doesn't mean much to most, but man, is it a time and life saver for me! Â One of these units will be sent to our other office to manage off-site backups as well.

And, we hate to ruin the illusion... But the blue team also has some rehearsals! Â Jamey has never performed the full-blown R-Show before. Â In fact I think he only saw it twice in Carolina last fall. Â So with him and Jon down in Florida, and myself in Charlotte, we scheduled a few webcam rehearsals to go over lines and discuss the many, many, many different joke threads that can be used in that show.

I'm actually very excited for Bay Area this year. Â Last year was the blue teams first year down there, and I was nervous. Â Hey, it's the home festival for the gold guys. Â Granted it's been near a decade since they've performed a full run there... but still. Â However this year, no worries. Â And I was excited to be working with Jamey there--his home festival--seeing how they react to him. Â And seeing what energy and dynamic he brought to the R-Show.

If opening weekend was any indication... No Problem! Â It was definitely a more polished show than we were able to put on last year... a tighter hand on the reins so to say.

Bay Area also marks the first time that the entire blue team has their own lodgings. Â Up to this point I've generally stayed with one or the other, or all three of us together. Â But at Bay Area, Jon and Lily found an efficiency apartment, and Jamey has his own apartment. Â I reached out to our friends who work the Kings Ale Pub. Â So for the next six weeks I'm bouncing around between Brandy's, Thom's, and Paul's. Â Thank you guys!!

So, yeah... stay tuned... this year is going to be a great one for the blue team. 😀

Did I spell "harumpf" correctly?

January, my first month with almost no Tortuga related business in quite a while. Â New years eve was pretty fun. Â Had my traditional new year's party with lots of friends over. Â All in all it was a laid back affair, but it was still great to have them all there.

Unfortunately I came down with a pretty nasty cold very soon after that. Â So I had to miss the Whipple's annual 12th night party. Â They throw it every year and invite pretty much every rennie inside a 200 mile radius. Â It's a lot of fun. Â And for photo whores such as myself it's a good occasion because there's always 3 or 4 professional photographers in the group. Â They always set up a makeshift photo studio in the garage and go crazy. Â I'll be between all of them they take 5,000 pictures in one evening.

My other exciting news is kinda geeky. Â A Memory of Light, the final book in the Wheel of Time series came out. Â I have been reading this series since about 1994. Â 14 books, many of them over a thousand pages. Â It has been a long, long time coming. Â The original author even died. Â Fortunately he left enough notes that his wife and editor choose a new author to finish the series. Â And oh god was it worth it. Â And the best part of the book?

I'm in it!

That's right! Â A year ago the author had held a fundraising campaign for a couple non-profits. Â If you donated $10 your name went into a hat. Â As he would need names during the writing of the final book, he'd pull them out of the hat. Â Imagine my surprise when I'm reading and stumble across a borderlander named "Ragon." Â Made My Month!

I also enjoyed a visit from the lovely Kat. Â She was nice enough to put me up for a few days during Hurricane Sandy. Â I figure the least I could do was let her visit North Carolina for a bit and escape the snowy North East. Â Why would anyone want to live where you have to shovel snow? Â Crazy talk!

Work has been going well, this month we've been installing some large EMC AVAMAR arrays.  Hoping to be able to move completely away from tape backups.  Which will make my life much better.

Guess what guys? Â Tampa is just around the corner? Â Bay Area Renaissance Festival, here we come!

Well, I lived through another perfectly good year. And an apocalypse. So life is pretty good so far. This month saw the end of Louisiana. This was the first year that Jef gave me the entire run down there. So I got to enjoy LaRF for three weekends. While working with the originals has it's own stress factor, I'm greatly going to miss this festival if/when Jef ever wants it back.

The camaraderie at the house is second to none. Food, friends, games, drinks. It truly is a special occasion each year. Unfortunately like every other festival it's still an hour away from the airport. I got to spend a night or two in New Orleans proper. I have got to get down there for Mardi Gras some year, but alas it probably won't be this year. Definitely need to make plans for the following. Hopefully by then the ol' finances will have gotten a little more solid for everyone, myself included.

We also had our first annual(?) Tortuga Twins Christmas Show. The guys had been writing it for most of the year, and they got input from us in the past couple months. I didn't have too much to do with it until the week of. But I know Jamey was swamped helping pick up props. Brian Holloway was a set-piece constructing monster. The originals were busy getting everyone lined up to do their part. And Jon was practicing being a smart ass.

We actually had a rehearsal on Wednesday night at my house. I think that's the first time I had all six of us there. Such a weird feeling, actually rehearsing a Tortuga show 😉 Load in and tech was Thursday, and oh dear god was that a case of organized chaos. Even the run through was so rough. I'll be honest, coming from a theatre background, I felt a little bad for the local tech crew. I'm sure they were thinking to themselves "Oh dear god, what are these fools doing?" But all doubt and hesitation washed away as soon as everyone stepped out on stage and "the crowd went wild." I can't believe what an amazing group of loving, supportive fans we have. Without all of you, I know I certainly wouldn't have nearly as much fun, or the freedom to get away with all the crazy shaningans that we do! Thank you one and all!

Christmas was pretty laid back for me. I saw my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew Christmas Eve. Christmas night I actually had some friends over and we played some card games. Oh, if you enjoy politically incorrect humor, pick up a copy of Cards Against Humanity. God damn is it an amazingly fun game. I'm probably going to be playing it again tonight!

Until January, take care and be safe everyone!!

Quite the November again. Â After making it back to Charlotte safely I finally had a weekend off! Â So what did I do? Â Naturally I visited the Carolina Renaissance Festival. Â Even as a paying patron at one point! Â Naturally I ran into many many friends. Â And had to sit through the R-Show. Â I'd be performing it soon in Louisiana and I wanted to see if I could pick up any of the new bits that the gold team had added since last year.

Then the next week it was off to Sarasota, FL.  This is actually the blue teams oldest festival, with this being our fourth year I believe.  However it was different this year.  Jon would be the only returning Tortuga.  Jamey and I would be joining him instead of Jimmae and Jef.  Jamey is originally from Tampa, just down the road, so he knew many of the people.  But for me it was a new experience.  It's a wet festival, so there's a lovely pub tent we could enjoy.  And of course two lovely Washing Well Wenches.  Jamey and I stayed at the house of a friend of his.  Jon and Lily had arranged to stay with another local couple down there.  It was a fun, crazy festival.  Very well put on.  And our shows went great.

Back home, because I'd be gone for Thanksgiving, we threw a Thanksgiving party one week early at my house. Â It was actually quite well attended, with a lot of amazing food. Â I'm still mad at Alex however for not leaving any of the turkey she made. Â She has an amazing brine that she uses. Â Oh dear god it was delicious!!!

The following weekend was the start of the Louisiana Renaissance Festival for us Tortugas.  So I got to spend my Thanksgiving at Hotel Haeuser.  It was a treat as always.  This was my third year being down there for Thanksgiving.  The friendship, kinship, and camaraderie displayed at that house year after year continues to amaze me.  Even if we didn't get around to shooting the firearms this year. 😀

Ah New England. Â Connecticut specifically. Â This may be one of our smaller festivals, but it's a fun one. Â After finally getting our camping site set-up--which I wrote about in last months journal--it was time to get down enjoy the festival.

We performed at our usual stage, The Goodleafe Tavern stage.  Which is an interesting name for a stage, given that there's no alcohol sales on site.  But we still made the best of it.  We shared the stage with our old friends the Lost Boys.  Like myself, most of them traveled up each weekend, so it was nice to have fellow friends to commiserate with on the difficulties of working full time and traveling on weekends.

We also got to see the lovely Vixens en Guarde once again. Â It's been far too long since we last saw these lovely ladies. Â We were fortunate enough to spend plenty of time hanging out with them grabbing dinners after the shows. Â If you ever get a chance to see one of their performances, do yourself a favor and make sure you get there.

Alas, the run was cut short. Â Hurricane Sandy was marching up the coast on the final weekend, and the decision was made early Saturday that we wouldn't open on Sunday. Â I tell you, I have never seen such a flurry of activity as I did Saturday night and Sunday morning. Â Everyone was working hard to get everything torn down and packed up. Â Most headed straight west to get away from the coast before heading south.

Unlucky me however, got caught by the storm. Â Come Monday morning all airports were shut down due to either power loss or high winds. Â Fortunately one of the local rennies, Katie came to my rescue. Â She and her parents let me crash at their place for a few days until Bradley International Airport opened up again on Wednesday. Â It was nice to have a couple days of forced vacation, but I wish there had been a few more things to do. Â But again, I can't thank them enough for putting up a wayward Tortuga for a few nights!!! Thank you!!!!!
