Tortugas Celebrate an Anniversary

Let’s talk about that final weekend in Arizona, shall we?!

For those that don’t know, March 25th is the Anniversary of the birth of the Tortuga Twins.

Happy 25th Anniversary, Scaramouche, Raphael & D'Angelo

Way back in 1987, D’Angelo and Raphael teamed up to delight their Florida fans.  It’s a day that will live in infamy forever.  Then, just 3 years later, that dastardly Scaramouche pulled off the ultimate April Fool prank by revealing himself as the third Tortuga.  This year marks, believe it or not, the 25thAnniversary of our beloved Twins.  To commemorate this momentous occasion, a banner was prominently displayed on the Tortuga Twins merchandise cart (along with balloons) and yes, my friends, there was cake.  Did the boys know about this beforehand?  No…just a little sumthin cooked up by those that adore them.  As offered by our lovely Cindy Gray, this is what transpired onstage.

Yes...there was cake!

“Finally, the R-rated show!  They began their usual round of banter, and a woman dressed as a nun walked across the front of the stage!  Scaramouche said “I always knew this day would come.”  They dropped on their knees and assumed a prayerful position – looking about as penitent as a Tortuga could.  They continued on with the beginning of the show and reached the point where Scaramouche says this is their 18th year in AZ and that it is their 25th Anniversary.  Krista (my 19-yo niece, who works faire as a wandering singer) walked out on stage and began singing “Happy Anniversary to you” in a perfect rendition of the guys’ birthday song, singing “happy anniversary, you three sexy men in tights who have been performing this damn show since before I was even bo-o-orn ….”  It was awesome!!  And then we had the usual April Fool’s hijinx – three Asian strippers with a sign saying “you should have been more specific” and Bryon Howe, our rather large kilt-wearing stage manager, chasing Raphael with a claymore a’la Braveheart!”

If anyone out there happened to film this little piece of Tortuga History, please let us know.  We’d love to have a copy.  www.thetwins@tortugatwins.com

Bay Area Renaissance Festival

Although Saturday was marred by rain…pouring rain…Salvador, Lucio and Coviello managed to have a pretty awesome day.  In what appeared to be a gender-bending Robin Hood, I was rather tickled by the “Evil Sheriff of Nottingham” being in pink and on stilts.

Stilts and Pink...a winning combination for a Sheriff

I’m pretty sure the beer shows took their toll as the only other report I got from anyone was that they absolutely LOVED their time at the Bay Area Renaissance Festival. I’m also being asked to add that Tortuga Twins fans in Florida are THE BEST!  Thanks to all that came out to play.  We hope to see you again next year.
